Acousto-optic modulators (AOM) are useful devices which allow the frequency, intensity and direction of a laser beam to be modulated. Within these devices incoming light Bragg diffracts off acoustic wave fronts which propagate through a crystal. Modulation of this incoming light can be achieved by varying the amplitude and frequency of the acoustic waves travelling through the crystal.
